You know it's amazing how much better the brain works when it isn't being continually battered by sounds, movement and colours. Try it sometime. Switch off the X Box, the loud music, anything designed to keep your brain in a continual spin. Listen to the silence and enjoy it. When you get to my age, like me you might not have silence, but instead tinnitus, strange noises in your head, apparently the brain trying to make sense of the messages sent to it by broken hairs in the ear. If you carry on listening to that music you will probably get tinnitus too. My problem was probably due to playing the violin right under my left ear! I am very fortunate with my tinnitus in comes in the guise of a Glen Miller band and I can go off to sleep, quite happily with it playing. But you have to be careful with giving the brain quietness, it's likely to make you think and this is possibly something you have not really done for a long time. Denial is so much easier than thinking, but denial has a habit of deserting you at the worst possible moment. So I recommend ten minutes quietness every day, gradually increasing the time till you can cope with a whole hour, but freedom comes with a cost.
When something very nasty comes our way we can only take in some much of the horror of the situation and then our minds protect us by putting us into a state of denial. It's all very well sitting cozy in the middle of a storm, but by doing that you can put others at risk. It is tempting to think that the corona virus situation is not real and won't touch you and your family, to think that somehow the heads of state who appeared so lately to be at loggerheads are in fact manufacturing the whole thing for their own purposes. Just see how the mind wants to divert us from the awful truth. Do you realize we could be on the point of the total collapse of civilization? That's why people panic buy because inside they realize food production and distribution could break down. Of course the little store they have been able to stash away will not last long. Deny us our food and we turn into much nastier human beings, well no that's the way we always were but this brings out...
