This week a young man was rightly hauled over the coals for putting a photo of a suicide victim on social media. I am now going to tell you about a death I witnessed, but this is not a gruesome attempt to interest you in the macabre, but a chance to tell you about the death of my father. I witnessed him pass from this life to eternity. He had been in hospital for about two weeks suffering from sepsis, very poorly and we had been told he that if he survived he would not be able to interact with us. This proved to be false and we had several conversations with him. He was a Christian. He was troubled about things that he had done in his youth, but I was able to reassure him that as he believed in Jesus what Jesus had done on the cross was far stronger than all his sins and they were forgiven. After this he was never troubled by these fears. One day I went to visit him in hospital and spoke to him. He opened his eyes and said,"Oh, I was just going to be with the Lord." I apologised for interrupting. He ate and drank less and less. On the final morning I was sitting by his bed, just watching and being with him. His breathing was changing, and I noticed his fingers turning blue and I realized his heart was not strong enough to pump the blood to his extremities. After a while his breathing gently ceased. A believer had gone home to heaven with his Saviour. This is the only death I have ever witnessed. A hundred years ago I would have seen many deaths in my lifetime, but now only those in the caring professions have regular contact with those who are dying. No doubt this is why the young in particular find the subject so fascinating. When you think about death you need to think about your position before God. Only Jesus can make us ready to meet God and one day you must meet Him.
When something very nasty comes our way we can only take in some much of the horror of the situation and then our minds protect us by putting us into a state of denial. It's all very well sitting cozy in the middle of a storm, but by doing that you can put others at risk. It is tempting to think that the corona virus situation is not real and won't touch you and your family, to think that somehow the heads of state who appeared so lately to be at loggerheads are in fact manufacturing the whole thing for their own purposes. Just see how the mind wants to divert us from the awful truth. Do you realize we could be on the point of the total collapse of civilization? That's why people panic buy because inside they realize food production and distribution could break down. Of course the little store they have been able to stash away will not last long. Deny us our food and we turn into much nastier human beings, well no that's the way we always were but this brings out...
